The Tour de France is always one of the most spectacular and dramatic events in sports. But the 1998 Tour provided drama like no other. As the opening stages in Ireland unfolded, the Festina team´s soigneur, Willy Voet, was arrested at the French-Belgian border with a carload of drugs. Raid upon police raid followed, with arrest after arrest hammering the Tour. In protest, there were riders´ strikes and go-slows, with several squads withdrawing en masse and one expelled. By the time the Tour reached Paris, just 96 of the 189 starters remained, and of those 189 starters, more than a quarter were later reported to have doped. The 1998 ´´Tour de Farce´s´´ status as one of the most scandal-struck sporting events in history was confirmed. Voet´s arrest was just the beginning of cycling´s biggest mass doping controversy - what became known as the Festina affair. It all but destroyed professional cycling as the credibility of the entire sport was called into question, and the cycling family began to split apart even as, ironically, the 1998 Tour was also one of the best races in years. The End of the Road is the first book in English to provide in-depth analysis and a colorful evocation of the tumultuous events of the 1998 Tour. Alasdair Fotheringham uncovers how the world´s biggest bike race sank into such scandal. He explores its long-term consequences and what, if any, lessons were learned. 1. Language: English. A new, thoroughly updated 12th edition of Bradt´s Madagascar, the leading and most comprehensive guide to this unique island nation, written by Hilary Bradt, who first visited in 1976 and has returned roughly 35 times, and Daniel Austin, who has visited 12 times and continues to travel there annually. Bradt´s Madagascar is by far the most thorough guide to the country in English and is written and updated by established experts whose unparalleled knowledge of Madagascar combines with contributions from over 50 experts in a book which has been the most authoritative guide to the country for three decades. It covers national parks and protected areas and includes itineraries to suit all interests and budgets, plus details of around 1,000 hotels and restaurants. Madagascar is like nowhere else on earth. It is fascinating not only zoologically and botanically, but culturally, linguistically, historically and geologically. This vast island is the fourth largest in the world and also the oldest. This is part of the reason why it has evolved into an incredible hotspot for biodiversity, with a truly unique flora and fauna that is more than 80% endemic to the island, and with new species being described virtually on a daily basis. Madagascar is also the only place where you can see wild lemurs. Almost a quarter of the world´s 450-or-so primates exist only here. With Bradt´s Madagascar you can visit tropical rainforest and seek out its incredible flora and fauna; explore the otherworldly eroded limestone spires, most famously at Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park -Madagascar´s most striking landscape; discover the beach-fringed islands around Nosy Be with their fabulous scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, whale-watching and fishing opportunities; and make the most of a host of adventuring and sporting possibilities, including surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, rock climbing, tree climbing, caving, river trips, mountain biking, distance running, quad biking, trekking and hiking. Also covered are the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ambohimanga; the renowned Avenue des Baobabs, one of the country´s most photographed scenes, and information on the best birdwatching spots: Madagascar has almost 300 avian species, with a high proportion of endemics, including five whole endemic families.
The stunning victory of the upstart New York Jets over the stalwart Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III transformed the NFL and established the Super Bowl as America s premier sporting event. While attending a banquet at the Miami Touchdown Club honoring his selection as the AFL s MVP, the brash Joe Nameth guaranteed a Jets victory in the forthcoming Super Bowl III and invoked a maelstrom of media attention. His bold personality, confidence, and strategic passing and play-calling during the game made good on his guarantee and gave the rebellious AFL its historic first Super Bowl victory over the rival NFL. The game had no shortage of heroes. Jets fullback Matt Snell rushed for a then-Super Bowl record 121 yards and scored the Jets lone touchdown. Ranked number 1 in the AFL, New York s defense forced five turnovers and held a Colts offense averaging 30 points per game against NFL opponents scoreless through three quarters. Baltimore called forth its share of heroics, as well. League MVP Earl Morrall turned over quarterback duties to Johnny Unitas in the third quarter. The injured legend is still possessed a touch of magic in his passing arm, and teammates hoped his leadership could save the Colts and the NFL from a humiliating defeat. Johnny U vs. Broadway Joe turned Super Bowl III into a classic matchup that still defines the football careers of the men who took the field in the Orange Bowl that fateful day. From Baltimore to Broadway is their story - told for the first time from the perspective of the players who graces both sidelines. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Brian Troxell. An entertaining look at one of sport´s greatest rivalries - the Ashes - by former England spin bowler Graeme Swann. Graeme Swann leads us on a compelling adventure through one of world sport´s most engrossing rivalries. He knows as much as anybody about the heat of England vs. Australia battles, having played in three series wins and also the whitewash defeat of 2013-14, when its intensity ended his international career. However, it brought out some of his best displays in Test cricket. But he is just one of dozens of colourful characters to have added their chapters to this great tome. The mock obituary of English cricket in the Sporting Times of 1882 was the forerunner of summers and winters of heaven and hell, depending on which side of the divide you were situated on. When it comes to on-field relations, nothing quite compares to the over-my-dead-body feel of the Ashes. From Grace to Sir Don, the most graceful of them all. From the foulest play to the fairest - contrast the 1932-33 Bodyline series affair to the image of Andrew Flintoff hunched over a distraught Brett Lee in 2005. From Ray Illingworth´s famous walk-off in the ´70s, when an England teammate was assaulted by a spectator, to Steve Waugh´s hugely emotional lap of honour when he retired a quarter of a century later. Swann´s book reveals the magic of a series that first gripped him in his front room in Northampton as an aspiring spin bowler in the mid-1980s. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Graeme Swann. Random House presents the audiobook edition of Strongman: My Story by Eddie ´The Beast´ Hall. ´If you never see me on the podium at World´s Strongest Man, I probably died trying.´ (Eddie Hall) Few athletes have had as big an impact on British sport over the last five years as Eddie Hall. Not only is he the subject of trending Netflix documentary Eddie: Strongman, but his Facebook page is approaching three quarters of a million likes, with 10,000 new fans joining each week, and he draws huge crowds at the Strongman arena tour Giants Live. The reason for Eddie´s popularity is simple: he is the biggest name and the biggest talent in one of the fastest-growing sports. He is pure box office. And it´s not just his fan base that is immense. Everything about Eddie is huge. Standing at six foot three, he weighs almost 31 stone, and to make it through his hellish four-hour gym sessions, he needs to eat a minimum of 11,000 calories. He puts himself under so much strain, his left eyeball once burst out of its socket. In his remarkable autobiography, Eddie takes you inside the world of the professional strongman - the nutrition, the training and the competitions themselves. It´s a visceral story of sporting achievement, of an athlete pushing himself to the limits, and the personal journey of a man on a path to being the best in the world. 1. Language: English.
