UPDATED EDITION The adrenaline-fueled, high-octane world of Formula One has created some of the greatest moments in sporting history. Its infamous circuits have played host to intense rivalries that have produced moments of tragedy and triumph that read like a film script. Since the 1950s, Bernard Cahier and his son, Paul- Henri, have been trackside capturing the drama of the Formula One Championships. Their stunning photographs chronicle both the changing face of the teams and their cars, from Lotus and Cooper to Williams and Ferrari, and of course the legendary drivers who have pushed their machines and themselves to the limits. Formula One correspondent Maurice Hamilton brings the stories behind these photographs to life; from the charismatic rivalries of Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss and the highly competitive Championship battles of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, through to the historic tales of Monaco´s winding course and the atmospheric crowds of Monza. With over 300 photographs - from the 1950s to the present day - all from The Cahier Archive and many previously unpublished, The Pursuit of Speed is the ultimate celebration of Formula One.
When post-grad Rachael Hamilton accidentally gate-crashes a pro-athlete party, she ends up face-to-face with Ryan Carter, the NFL´s most beloved quarterback. While most girls would be thrilled to meet the attractive young millionaire, Rachael would rather spend time with books than at sporting events, and she has more important things to worry about than romance—like her parents pressuring her to leave her unpaid publishing internship for law school. But when Ryan´s rookie teammate attaches himself to Rachael, she ends up cohosting Friday-night dinners for half a dozen football players. Over pancake brunches, charity galas, and Alexander the Great, Rachael realizes all the judgments she´d made about Ryan are wrong. But how can a Midwestern Irish-Catholic jock with commitment problems and an artsy, gun-shy Jewish New Englander ever forge a partnership? Rachael must let down her barriers if she wants real love—even if that opens her up to pain that could send her back into her emotional shell forever. 1. Language: English. There is only one path to true love, no matter how fate, fortune, or destiny play. Lady Isabella Fortescue has tired of trying to bring a man up to scratch. At thirty-one, she´s put herself on the shelf and is glad for it, except she wants to have one splendid folly to call her own before that happens. But the unorthodox arrival of a horribly rude man makes her think even a scandal isn´t possible. Captain Peregrine St. John has sworn off women—indefinitely. With the ill-luck of his last relationship fresh in his mind, he retires from naval service sporting a bum leg and a shattered heart. Rustication proves beyond boring, and a visit to a gypsy fair has him face down in the mud on a stormy afternoon. The heated admonishment from a lady only further cements his attitude on the fairer sex. As fate would have it, Isabella and Peregrine are neighbors in Buckinghamshire. As country social life throws them together, tempers rise with each new meeting and sparks fly. Verbal banter gives way to wicked glances, and teasing kisses flare into passion on one glorious night. Fortune might predict happiness or foolish error, but love can only bloom if they listen to true desires hidden deep inside their hearts.
At the age of 50, Eddie Brocklesby decided to run her first half marathon. Until that point, she´d done little running, and her exercise regime consisted of little more than chauffeuring her children to their own sports clubs. In common with so many people, any interest she´d shown in sport in her childhood had diminished as her adult life progressed, with spare time becoming ever more limited in the face of work and family commitments. But the half marathon was the first of what was to become a hugely impressive trajectory of sporting accolades and successes. After that event, and following the loss of her husband of 30 years to cancer, she completed a marathon. Now nearly 74, the past 20 years have seen her take part in marathons, triathlons and Ironman races across the globe, and she has accrued many medals and awards. In Irongran, Eddie looks back on her life and explains just how she´s managed to develop the energy to match the enthusiasm she´s always had for an active lifestyle. She shares the difficulties she´s experienced in her sporting endeavours and explains how she´s managed to overcome them. Eddie is passionate about the health and well-being of our ageing population and provides up-to-date research about why keeping active in later years is so important, along with guidance about how to remain full of life in your later years. 1. Beijing 2008, the 100 metres final: Usain Bolt slows down, beats his chest, metres clear of his nearest rival, his face filled with the euphoria of a young man utterly in thrall to his extraordinary physical talent. It is one of the greatest sporting moments. It is just the beginning. Of the 10 fastest 100-metres times in history, eight belong to Jamaicans. How is it that a small Caribbean island has come to almost totally dominate the men’s and women’s sprint events? The Bolt Supremacy opens the doors to a community where sprinting permeates conversations and interactions; where the high school championships are watched by 35,000 screaming fans; where identity, success and status are forged on the track; and where making it is a pass to a world of adoration and lucrative contracts. In such a society there can be the incentive for some to cheat. There are those who attribute Jamaican success to something beyond talent and hard work. Award-winning writer Richard Moore doesn’t shy away from difficult questions as he travels the length of this beguiling country speaking to antidoping agencies, scientists and sceptics, as well as to coaches, gurus, superstar athletes and the young guns desperate to become the next big thing. Peeling back the layers, Moore finally reveals the secrets of Usain Bolt and the Jamaican sprint factory. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Richard Moore.
